Eurovision Song Contest – All You need to know

This year, the UK is trying to win the Eurovision Song Contest with an entry by Engelbert Humperdinck. The 75 year old Engelbert Humperdinck has been chosen to represent the BBC at the contest. The song that Engelbert Humperdinck has chosen to sing is “Love Will Set You Free”.

Favourites to Win Eurovision

Most informed followers of the contest are thinking that he will come in fourth with Sweden coming in first with her submission of “Euphoria” performed by their chosen artist Loreen. The most probably second place winner is said to be the Russian pop artist group Buranovskiye Babushki who will perform “Party For Everybody”. There is a potential up setter of the betting odds as Ireland’s singers the Jedward twins will be performing “Waterline”.

When is Eurovision ?

The European Song Contest includes 42 entries from 42 countries. On May 22 and May 24, semi-finals will begin and will be aired on BBC. The final screening for the BBC will be aired on Saturday, May 26. The semi-finals will eliminate many of the 42 entrants to the Eurovision Song Contest. The contest only has room for 26 entries. That means that during the semi-finals 16 entries will be eliminated and 10 will qualify for the final screening.

Other finalist will come from countries like Azerbaijan which won the contest last year and is the host country this year. Other contestants come from country’s that pay to have the contest. These financial backers of the Eurovision Song Contest, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, and the UK are automatically entered into the final screening. The winners of the Eurovision Song Contest have usually been picked from countries that pay for the contest.

Winners of Eurovision

The country that has had the most wins in the Eurovision Song Contest is Ireland. They won in 1992 through 1994 and again in 1996. The UK ties Ireland with as many wins. They won in 1967, 1969, 1976, 1981 and 1997. Other countries that have equal wins are Luxembourg and France. Sweden and Netherlands have four win. Israel and Norway have three. 15 countries have never won. Portugal has competed a total of 45 times without a win.
